Model Mural

Here is the actual size of our mosaic mural space - it is huge.
Students cut the edge of the large paper so that it is the actual size and shape of our outdoor space.

Day 2 - Edges and Contrast

Day one, the kids got hands on experience in scoring and cutting tile.

Today, everyone is fitting cut tiles to their selected design.

For the students to be able to 'color' in their drawings with tile, they first had to identify light and dark sections to create contrast. Students are cutting and selecting tile in 3 different values for their compositions.

Mosaic 101 - The Direct Method

Visiting local artist, Christine Schilling, introduces Glendale Art and Biology students to the basics of the mosaic process.

Students have been drafting designs for the 10 x 88 foot mural for over a week.

The drafting process began with individual brain storming (sketches), then students researched images such as native Missouri plants, wildlife, and organisms to develop a more concise and refined design. Finally, students collaborated in groups and created a larger scale mural design incorporating everyone's images that relate to Missouri wildlife and ecosystems.
